FCWS will soon be sheltering families!

Have you heard the rumors? They are true! The Franklin County Women’s Shelter is on the way to becoming the Franklin County Women and Family Shelter!

When a nonprofit organization expands, it is often a bittersweet moment. A moment of anticipation and growth, filled with an air of excitement of planning for the future. But, it is mixed with the knowledge that it is all happening because there are people in the community who need help and need services. In our case, it is happening because there are families with children who are homeless and don’t have a shelter to lean on.

The Women’s Shelter originally grew out of a desire to fill an unmet need in the community. Our expansion has happened in a very similar manner. We have had requests for shelter from 52 families this year and have only been able to actually house 20. We have spent close to $5,000 already this year on hotel rooms, primarily sheltering families. It became clear that a shelter for families was going to remain a need in this community.

With a lot of brainstorming, partnership, and work, FCWS received the keys to a duplex across the street from our current Women’s Shelter yesterday. This building was graciously donated by the Frankfort Housing Authority. After some minor repair, renovation, and furnishings this building will become a temporary home to homeless families in our community for years to come.

In sticking with our long held beliefs that it takes a village to run a successful shelter, we hope to have lots of support from the community in the next 2 months as we work hard to open the Family Shelter. Please stay tune to see how you can help! We plan to have a couple of volunteer work days. As our need arises for household furnishings and supplies we will send out requests. And of course, we will need money. Capital City Christian Church has provided a very generous donation to help get the project underway, but we will need additional funds to make this a reality. Donations of any size are accepted on our website 24/7.

As always, we are honored to provide these much needed services to this community and greatly appreciate your support!
